The Boatman and the Scholar: A scholar approached the bank of a river and asked the boatman to ferry him across. As the boatman was rowing, the scholar asked him: "Do you know grammar?" "No" answered the boatman, "I don't know anything about grammar". "Akh!" replied the scholar, "if you don't know anything about grammar, you have lost half your life". The boat had reached halfway across the river. Suddenly a great wind arose and capsized the boat and both fell in to the water. "Help" shouted the scholar, "I don't know how to swim!" "Akh!" replied the boatman, "if you don't know how to swim, you have lost all of your life".
